The current theory test was introduced over 14 years ago and its current format has been around now for 10 years. The Theory Test currently costs £31 and can be booked online or by telephoning the DSA or alternatively if you have an Instructor they may be able to arrange this for you. The first part of the test is a multiple choice question section. In this section the candidate is shown 50 multiple choice questions which they have to answer at least 43 correctly (86%) in order to pass that section. The candidate is given 57 minutes to complete the theory test although extra time for certain situations can be arranged.
The questions are divided into 14 sections ranging from alertness to accidents and road signs and markings to vulnerable road users. In the test the candidate will have to choose either one or more answers from the list provided on each question in order to answer correctly, they will be told how many answers there are to each question.
The trick to making this part of the test easier is first to carefully read the question, some questions ask things like what is the safest, or what is best which means that there may be two answers that are correct but one is better or safer than the other and if not read correctly may lead the candidate to answer incorrectly. A second tact is to give answer that are very similar and again required very careful reading to make sure you have answered correctly. Usually within the answers you can discount one or more answers as they are silly or obviously incorrect such as telling you to wave people across the road or to keep going through an amber/red light, if you can discount these answer you improve your chances of getting the right answer.
While you are answering these questions you have the option to flag any question that you are unsure about and come back to later. This is not a bad idea as the questions are picked at random and some questions may lead you to the answer for others later on, you can only review those that you mark otherwise you will not be able to change your answer. You are also allowed a pen a paper while taking your test to make any notes to help with your answers. After this part in the theory test there will be a short break before you start the second part of the test which is the hazard perception test which will test your understanding of hazards to look out for while driving. In order to pass the theory test you need to pass both sections at the same time otherwise you will have to book the theory test again until you do.
